What is PayPal?
PayPal is an online payment service that is supported in most countries where online money transactions are supported.
When it comes to a PayPal account, the procedure for closing it is different when it comes to the account of a deceased person. Only the executor/administrator of an estate has the right to request the closing of the deceasedโs account.
Closing a Paypal account when someone dies
- The administrator/executor is asked to send the following documents to PayPalโs ICA department for review:
- A cover sheet from the Requestor (or a person who is duly appointed or authorized to administer the estate of the deceased customer) identifying the account by the primary email address and request to have PayPal account closed
- The requestor’s email address, so our Deceased Account Team can reach out directly
- A copy of the death certificate for the account holder
- A copy of a government-issued photo ID (such as a driverโs license, passport, or state-issued ID) of the Requestor
- Legal documentation or a copy of the will that identifies the executor of the estate

Now that you know how to delete a Paypal account when someone dies, you might also realize the complications that may arise during the process. The major one is usually not having access to the account holderโs login information.ย
But for deleting a PayPal account, they only receive requests from the Executor of an estate. By making use of a Digital Estate Plan, you get to decide what happens to each of your Digital Assets following your death or incapacitation.
